Meeting with the guide and delivery of the bicycles. After the bike fitting, you reach Battaglia Terme, an ancient river port on the Euganean Hills, a real museum spread with curious hydraulic artefacts and Venetian bridges. Just outside the centre, the bulk of the Castello del Catajo dominates, as imposing as a medieval castle but internally frescoed like a Renaissance villa. Along cycle paths in the countryside that offer the first suggestive panoramic views we reach the Praglia Abbey, the most important Benedictine monastery in the Euganean Hills. Here the monks pray, work and restore ancient books. In their shop you can find the wine, honey and cosmetics they produce. We continue the journey towards Luvigliano, where the imposing Villa dei Vescovi dominates the valley, for centuries the summer residence of the bishops of Padua, restored and open to the public by the FAI – Italian Environment Fund. The Villa is inspired by classical themes and dialogues with the external landscape thanks to the frescoes of its loggias and internal environments.
Continue along secondary roads up to the Valsanzibio Gardens. Afterwards, a tasting lunch awaits us in the cellar. During the tasting, all the secrets of the wines of the Euganean Hills will be explained to us, a unique territory that alternates volcanic and calcareous soils, giving different aromas and scents that can only be found here.
The excursion continues until you reach the pretty Arquà Petrarca, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and one of the best preserved medieval cities. The settlement presents a singular bipolarity: two villages, two churches and two squares.
The view is never the same and we soon reach the walled city of Monselice. The castle hill is an extraordinary example of historical stratification: there you can find the Federician keep and the Ezzelian tower from the medieval era but what is most striking are the Renaissance works which culminate with the Sanctuary of the Seven Churches and Villa Duodo.
